Laundry & Mudroom

A cramped laundry room with a toilet wedged in the corner, reworked into a single room that does two jobs well. A proper mudroom on one side, a real laundry on the other.

The original room was doing too cramped, visually unappealing, and functionally inadequate. A toilet in the corner, builder-grade cabinets, beige walls, and a standard swing door that ate into the floor every time it opened. The family wanted a real mudroom for the kids coming in from the yard, and a laundry that felt functional.

We pulled the toilet, capped the plumbing, and split the footprint into two zones inside the same room. The mudroom side got a full-height built-in: a bench long enough for kids to sit and pull off cleats, four hooks, open cubbies above for baskets, and shoe storage tucked underneath. On the laundry side, new custom cabinetry in the same soft blue-green, a stone counter that runs the length of the wall, a deep sink for the things you don't want to put in the kitchen, and a tile backsplash that keeps it light.

The biggest change to how the room feels is the door. We pulled the original swing door, reframed the opening wider, and hung a glass barn door on a black track. It gave back the floor space the old door was stealing, pulled daylight from the laundry into the hallway, and kept the room separate without closing it off from the rest of the house.

The floor ties the two zones together. A patterned tile with enough character to make the space feel considered, quiet enough to live with every day. New windows brought in real light. The rattan pendant and the small swing-arm sconce over the sink keep it warm at night.
